Photo shoot inspires opportunity to enrich company culture

Company photoshoot at coffee shop

The first Written coffee shop photo.

Today Marc and I took a few photos at a coffee shop to use for a background image on our new company homepage. We chose a coffee shop because it is an iconic location where many bloggers do much of their writing. (That’s me in the green t-shirt and funky glasses.) Marc and I both posed for photos and Connor ended up selecting one with me in it. At some point during the day it dawned on me that this could be a great opportunity to positively affect company culture.

Instead of keeping the background image of just me, we decided that any employee could become the background image on our homepage. They simply need to go to a coffee shop, one that hasn’t been submitted yet and take a photo like the one I took.

At first it will be easy to find a coffee shop and take a photo, but after some time we’ll use up all of the local coffee shops and employees will need to travel farther outside of Austin to get photos. If someone is on a trip to Japan, they duck into a coffee shop, take the photo and boom, they are featured on our homepage. If this takes off, we’ll be able to create a wonderful collage of all of Written’s employees at various coffee shops. I’m excited about the idea and suspect that it could become an important part of our culture.
